How can psychotherapy help?
by the Maia team
We may sometimes find that we are burdened with a tough emotion to manage. We might be going through a difficult time during which we feel stressed, anxious or depressed. We might be facing a situation in which decisions need to be made and we are confused about which path would be best to choose. It could be that sometimes we face doubt: doubts about ourselves, doubts about our relationships, our choices, or about where we are going in the future.
Some people go through times when they wish to learn more about themselves and desire to invest in who they are and to pursue an increased understanding about what makes them, them and what makes them tick.
Sometimes we might get the urge, the wish, the desire, simply to connect to another human being – connecting authentically, connect as you, rather than as a role or as someone else’s expectation of who you have to be. This desire may be to feel safe in sharing our thoughts and emotional turmoil with someone else, someone who will not judge us, be critical of us or tell us what we should or should not be, do or have done. So how can psychotherapy help?
Psychotherapy is this experience. Sitting with a trained professional who is bound by professional secrecy, the client is supported in exploring themselves, their emotions, their relationships and their life choices, in depth. This can indeed sometimes be and painful experience, as previously avoided themes, issues or past experiences are carefully and compassionately explored and brought into awareness. These past experiences, usually having occurred in childhood, shape our emotional lives and affect how we think and how we react to what happens in our daily lives today. These experiences may still be haunting us, blocking us from change, growth and moving forward in our present lives.
Psychotherapy, or ‘talking therapy’, can therefore enable the client to identify, explore and understand underlying issues which may have developed in childhood or through other life experiences. This thus enables better insight, understanding and awareness of yourself, your life, your relationships and your life choices.
Therapy can be used for a range of different issues, from grief, anger, relationships difficulties, to mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. It can also be effective in treating behavioural issues such as eating disorders or addictions. The frequency of therapy is decided between you and your therapist, depending on your needs and your current situation.
Broadly speaking, psychotherapy can change your life. Not only can it alleviate pain and emotional suffering, as well as help you cope better with painful emotions, but it can also help you learn more about yourself, why you are who you are, act the way you do and react in the ways you react. With more awareness and understanding comes the possibility to make new choices and new decisions.
